You won’t plan a trip to Uncertain, Texas for the modern conveniences, the night life or the fine dining. Although there are some excellent mom and pop restaurants in town offering traditional and not so traditional down home cuisine, the only real attraction is the Texas/Louisiana border lake – Caddo and it’s surrounding beauty. And that is attraction enough. A visit to this historic little town in the piney woods region of East Texas is like a trip back in time. And to most, that is it’s main draw.

Ours was an impromptu, possibly desperate attempt to get a Roadshow episode at a time when pretty much the entire sate of Texas was under water. (See Roadshow Diaries entry) Despite many failed attempts to make a show relatively close to home, we decided to make a 500 mile roadie across the state through what seemed a never-ending deluge of thunderstorms, pelting rain and hail. It was mid July, which is a little late into the summer for the best fishing. Not because the fish don’t bite but because the further into summer you get the more the lake’s abundant vegetation takes over, limiting access to fishable water. Seemed we were up against some steep odds. But we were in good hands. Our guide Paul Keith knows the crooks and crannies of Caddo as well as anybody. He is who to know on Caddo. Be sure to give him a call when you plan your trip.

Fishing with professional bass angler and Strike King prostaffer Debra Hengst on Falcon Lake in Zapata, TX. The two days we fished just happened to be on the heels of a relatively rare cold front for deep south Texas, even for the first week of February, which stirred the lake up a bit. We were able to finesse a few nice ones up on Strike King soft plastics. The Zero seemed to be what they wanted for the most part but we had some success with The Rage Craw as well on the first day. The following day brought clear skies and calmer waters and our lures of choice were Strike King spinnerbaits.

With adequate nutrition, a feral hog population can double in 4 months!!!

Estimates are that these wild pigs cause $52 million in damage statewide each year. Feral swine are classified as non-game animals and can be hunted any time of year using any method. This has led to the birth of a new hunting industry — guided hog trips. While hogs eyesight is very poor, their other senses such as smell and hearing are very acute providing for a challenging hunt and the pay off is that their meat is very lean and tasty. In this day and age, most land owners are more than happy to allow hunters to help control their hog populations so the opportunity for year-round hunting is typically as easy as a knock on a door or a phone call. Hunt hogs!! The environment will thank you!

September 19 and 20, Texas shot gunners will again gather in Karnes City for the Annual Lonesome Dove Fest – a family oriented event put on by the Karnes City Rotary Club celebrating the opening of dove hunting season in the south zone. The event is a great time for everyone in your family and/or circle of friends. Youth Day offers several hundred area high school students mini-seminars in firearm safety, resource and wildlife management and general outdoor activities. There is also a parade, a competitive Sporting Clays Team Shoot, and musical entertainment. Oh and the dove cook-off is awesome! It’s a great way to kick off opening day.
